After a period of parliamentary activity, he returned to the cabinet as Minister of Foreign Affairs under Prime Minister Victor Ponta, serving from 7 May 2012 until his resignation on 23 November 2014 following a diplomatic incident involving the Romanian embassy in Budapest.
