Titoudao

Titoudao is a Singaporean theatre play written by playwright Goh Boon Teck. The work was first staged in May 1994 at Jubilee Hall, Raffles Hotel, Singapore, by Toy Factory Productions. It draws its narrative from the life of Madam Oon Ah Chiam, a former street‑opera (wayang) performer and the mother of Goh Boon Teck, and explores themes of gender inequality, poverty, and the cultural heritage of Chinese street opera in mid‑20th‑century Singapore.

Synopsis

The play employs a “play‑within‑a‑play” structure. The inner drama, also titled Titoudao, recounts the story of a loyal male servant, Titoudao, and his master Ti Boon Long, whose family faces financial hardship and social marginalisation. Interwoven with this is the real‑life story of Ah Chiam, who, together with her sister Ah Dui, is sent to a street‑opera troupe for training. The narrative follows Ah Chiam’s artistic development, personal relationships, and the challenges she confronts as a female performer in a male‑dominated tradition.
