The Tirana District (Albanian: Rrethi i Tiranës) was one of the 36 administrative districts (rrethe) of Albania until the nationwide territorial‑reform of 2000, which replaced districts with 12 counties (qark).
Geography
- Situated in central Albania, the district encompassed the capital city of Tirana and its surrounding municipalities.
- The district covered an area of approximately 1,193 km² (460 sq mi).
Administrative centre
- The city of Tirana served as the district’s administrative seat and the political, economic, and cultural hub of the nation.
Population
- According to the 2001 Albanian census, the district had a population of roughly 523,267 inhabitants.
Territorial reform
- In July 2000, Law No. 8659 re‑organized Albania’s local government structure, abolishing districts. Their territories were merged into the newly created counties. The former Tirana District became part of Tirana County (Qarku i Tiranës), which now comprises the municipalities of Tirana, Kamëz, and others.
Legacy
- Although the district no longer exists as an administrative unit, the term “Tirana District” remains in historical and statistical contexts, particularly when referencing pre‑2000 demographic or geographic data.
