Timothy Bateson

Timothy Bateson (3 April 1926 – 16 September 2009) was a British actor, known for his prolific career across film, television, radio, and theatre. A versatile character actor, he frequently played eccentrics, meek figures, and comic relief roles throughout his seven-decade career.

Early Life and Career

Born in London, England, Bateson began his acting career in the late 1940s. He quickly established himself as a reliable and distinctive performer, particularly in stage productions.

Film

Bateson appeared in numerous films, often in supporting roles that showcased his unique characterisations. Some of his notable film credits include:

  • Doctor in the House (1954) – as a medical student
  • The Anatomist (1961) – as Hare
  • Oliver! (1968) – as a Workhouse Assistant
  • Labyrinth (1986) – providing the voice of the friendly but confusing Worm, who famously tells Sarah, "Come inside, have a cup of tea."
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) – providing the original voice of Kreacher, the house-elf. He was later replaced by Simon McBurney for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.

Television

His television career was extensive, with appearances in a wide range of popular British series and adaptations. Highlights include:
