Tim Wirth

Timothy Endicott Wirth (born December 4, 1939) is an American author, environmentalist, and former Democratic politician who served as a U.S. Representative (1975–1981) and U.S. Senator (1987–1993) from Colorado. After leaving elected office, he held several leadership positions in nonprofit and governmental organizations focused on energy policy and climate change.

Early life and education
Wirth was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He attended St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Arizona in 1962. He later pursued graduate studies at the University of Colorado Boulder but did not complete a degree there.

Political career

U.S. House of Representatives
In 1974, Wirth was elected to represent Colorado’s 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served three terms, focusing on environmental legislation, energy policy, and natural resource management.

U.S. Senate
Wirth was elected to the United States Senate in 1986, succeeding Gary Hart. He served a single six‑year term, during which he was a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. His legislative work emphasized renewable energy development, wilderness preservation, and climate research. He did not seek re‑election in 1992 and left office in January 1993.

Post‑senatorial work

Environmental advocacy and policy
After his Senate term, Wirth served as president of the League of Conservation Voters (1993–1996). He was appointed by President Bill Clinton as a senior adviser on climate and energy issues to the United Nations Development Programme (1997–1999). From 2000 to 2008, he chaired the board of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and acted as a senior fellow at the Earth Institute of Columbia University.

Diplomatic roles
In 2009, the U.S. Department of State named Wirth a special envoy for climate change, where he engaged in international negotiations on greenhouse‑gas mitigation and renewable‑energy cooperation.

Authorship
Wirth is the author of several books on environmental and political subjects, including A Country of Rivers: The Life of John Wesley Powell (2000) and Sustainability: A Way of Life (2014). He has contributed articles to major newspapers and journals on energy policy and climate action.

Personal life
Wirth is married to Ruth Wirth; the couple has two children. He resides in Boulder, Colorado, and is active in local conservation projects.

Recognition
Wirth has received numerous awards for his work on environmental issues, including the Sierra Club’s John Muir Award and the World Wildlife Fund’s Conservation Leadership Award.
