Description
Tillandsia utriculata is a large epiphytic bromeliad characterized by a rosette of stiff, gray-green leaves that can reach 30–45 cm (12–18 in) in length. The leaves are recurved, forming an umbrella‑shaped canopy that funnels water toward the central tank. The plant’s leaf bases overlap, creating a pronounced “urn” (hence the specific epithet utriculata, meaning “small bag” or “urceolate”).

The inflorescence emerges from the center of the rosette on a stout peduncle that may exceed 60 cm (24 in) in height. The flower spike bears numerous small, pale lavender to pinkish bracts and tubular sepals. Flowers are typically white to pale green, with three petals and three sepals, and they produce a modest amount of nectar that attracts pollinators such as hummingbirds and certain insects.

In Florida, the species is listed as “floristic element of concern” in some county inventories, reflecting its sensitivity to urban development and pesticide use.

Tillandsia utriculata is popular in ornamental horticulture for its striking size and architectural form. Cultivation guidelines include:

  • Light: Bright, indirect sunlight; tolerate some direct morning sun.
  • Water: Soak in rainwater or distilled water for 30–60 minutes once weekly; fully dry before the next watering to prevent rot.
  • Air circulation: Good airflow is essential to dry the leaf surfaces.
