Description
Tillandsia compressa is a small, non‑soil‑dependent (epiphytic) bromeliad. The plant forms a compact, flattened rosette of narrow, overlapping leaves that give the species its epithet “compressa.” Leaves are typically 2–4 cm long, 2–5 mm wide, and may exhibit a gray‑green coloration with a fine trichome covering that aids in water and nutrient absorption from the air. The inflorescence is usually simple or short‑branched, emerging centrally from the rosette. Flowers are modest in size, presenting greenish‑white to pale pink tepals, and are followed by small, capsular fruits that release minute, wind‑dispersed seeds equipped with pappi.

Distribution and Habitat
Tillandsia compressa is native to Mesoamerica. Documented occurrences include:

  • Mexico: southern states such as Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Veracruz.
  • Central America: Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

The species inhabits humid, forested environments, typically growing on tree branches, bark crevices, or occasionally on rocks (lithophytic growth). It favors elevations ranging from 500 m to 1,500 m, where mist and cloud cover provide the moisture required for its aerial lifestyle.

Ecology
As an epiphyte, T. compressa derives water and nutrients from atmospheric sources, rain, and detritus that collects on its leaf surfaces. The dense trichome layer reduces water loss and reflects excess light, allowing the plant to tolerate intermittent drought and high light conditions. Its flowers attract a variety of pollinators, primarily small insects such as bees and certain dipterans. Seed dispersal is wind‑mediated, facilitating colonization of new arboreal substrates.

Conservation Status
There is currently no assessment of Tillandsia compressa on the IUCN Red List. The species does not appear to be under immediate threat; however, habitat loss due to deforestation and land‑use change in its native range could impact local populations. Conservation measures that protect forest canopies indirectly benefit epiphytic bromeliads, including T. compressa.

Cultivation
Tillandsia compressa is cultivated by bromeliad enthusiasts for its compact form and low maintenance requirements. Recommended horticultural practices include:

  • Mounting: Attach to wood, cork, or mesh for optimal airflow.
  • Light: Bright indirect light; tolerates some direct morning sun.
  • Water: Soak 2–3 times weekly in warm water; ensure thorough drying to prevent rot.
  • Air Circulation: Good ventilation is essential to mimic its natural aerial habitat.
  • Fertilisation: Weak bromeliad or orchid fertilizer at quarter strength, applied during soakings.

The species propagates readily from seed and, less commonly, through offsets (pups) that may develop on mature plants.
