Tibold, also rendered as Tybold or Tibolch, was the name of a gens (Latin for “clan”) in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and later in the Kingdom of Croatia. The clan’s eponymous founder, Theobald, is recorded as having arrived from the Kingdom of Germany in the late 10th century, during the reign of Géza, Grand Prince of the Hungarians.
The Tibold clan became part of the Hungarian nobility, with members documented in various medieval charters and genealogical records. The family’s presence continued into the Croatian realm following the political union of Hungary and Croatia.
The term “Tibold” is thus a historical designation for a noble lineage rather than a biological taxonomic genus.
