Tiago Monteiro (born 19 July 1976) is a Portuguese professional racing driver. He is best known for competing in Formula One from 2005 to 2009 and for his subsequent success in touring car and endurance racing series.
Early life and education
Monteiro was born in Porto, Portugal. He began karting at an early age before transitioning to single‑seater formula cars.
Formula One career
- 2005: Debuted with the Jordan team (later rebranded as Midland).
- 2006: Raced for the newly formed Spyker MF1 team.
- 2007–2009: Drove for the newly formed BMW Sauber team (later rebranded as BMW Sauber), achieving his sole Formula One podium at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing third.
Post‑Formula One racing
After leaving Formula One, Monteiro switched to touring car competition:
- Competed in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with SEAT Sport and later with Chevrolet and Honda, winning multiple races and securing the vice‑championship title in 2012.
- Participated in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the Rebellion Racing and later the Alpine Elf Team, achieving class victories at events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Other notable activities
Monteiro has also taken part in the European Le Mans Series, the 24 Hours of Spa, and various GT racing series, often driving prototypes or GT3 cars for factory-backed teams.
Personal life
Monteiro is married and has children. He is involved in promoting motorsport in Portugal and has occasionally acted as a television commentator and brand ambassador for automotive companies.
