Thyreocoridae

Thyreocoridae is a family of true bugs (order Hemiptera, suborder Heteroptera) belonging to the superfamily Pentatomoidea. Members of this family are commonly known as “ebony bugs” or “negro bugs” due to their typically small, glossy, black or dark‑coloured exoskeletons.

Taxonomy and Nomenclature

  • The family name Thyreocoridae was established in 1843 and has priority over the later synonym Corimelaenidae (published in 1872).
  • Historically, some authors treated the group as a subfamily (Thyreocorinae) within the broader family Cydnidae, but modern classifications recognize Thyreocoridae as a distinct family.
  • The family is divided into two subfamilies:
Thyreocorinae – containing a few genera and species primarily distributed outside the Neotropics.
Corimelaeninae – the larger subfamily, comprising the majority of species and exhibiting a worldwide distribution.

Diversity

  • Approximately 212 described species are placed in about 12 genera across the two subfamilies.

Morphology

  • Adults are generally small, rarely exceeding 6 mm in length.
  • Their bodies are dorsally flattened and heavily sclerotised, giving a smooth, often metallic appearance.
  • Unlike many related shield bugs, Thyreocoridae lack prominent tibial spines, a feature useful for distinguishing them from members of Cydnidae.

Ecology and Biology

  • Thyreocoridae are phytophagous, feeding on a variety of plant parts such as grasses, weeds, berries, and flowers.
  • They are typically found in terrestrial habitats ranging from open fields to forest edges.
  • The life cycle follows the usual hemipteran pattern of egg, nymphal instars, and adult, with several generations possible per year in temperate regions.

Distribution

  • Species of Thyreocoridae occur on most continents, with the subfamily Corimelaeninae having a particularly cosmopolitan range.
