Thomas Pöck (born 30 January 1986) is an Austrian former professional ice‑hockey defenceman. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Washington Capitals and the Buffalo Sabres, and represented Austria in multiple International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) tournaments, including the World Championships and the Winter Olympics.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Pöck was born in Bad Aussee, Austria. He moved to the United States as a teenager to pursue ice‑hockey development and attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. While at Holy Cross, he played for the Crusaders men's ice‑hockey team, appearing in all 34 games of the 2005‑06 season and earning recognition for his defensive play.
Professional Career
North American Minor Leagues
After completing his collegiate career, Pöck signed with the Ottawa Senators organization in 2008 but primarily played in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Binghamton Senators. He later joined the Washington Capitals organization, splitting time between the NHL club and its AHL affiliates, including the Hershey Bears.
NHL Tenure
- Washington Capitals (2009‑2012): Pöck made his NHL debut on 10 March 2009 against the Philadelphia Flyers. Over three seasons with Washington, he appeared in 55 regular‑season games, recording three assists.
- Buffalo Sabres (2012‑2014): In July 2012, Pöck signed a two‑year contract with the Sabres. He played 53 NHL games for Buffalo, scoring his first NHL goal on 16 November 2012 against the Dallas Stars.
Return to Europe
Following his North American stint, Pöck returned to Europe, signing with Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian Hockey League (EBEL) in 2014. He later played for other European clubs, including a season with the Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan team Modo Hockey.
