Thomas Eugene Everhart (born June 4 1932) is an American physicist, educator, and former university administrator, best known for his contributions to electron optics and his tenure as the 7th president of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Early life and education
Everhart was born in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Rochester in 1954, followed by a Master of Science (1956) and a Ph.D. (1958) in physics from Cornell University. His doctoral research focused on electron‑beam interactions and instrumentation.
Scientific contributions
While a researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in the early 1960s, Everhart co‑developed the Everhart–Thornley detector, a highly sensitive secondary‑electron detector that became a standard component of scanning electron microscopes (SEMs). The detector’s design significantly improved image contrast and signal‑to‑noise ratio, facilitating advances in materials science, biology, and semiconductor research. Everhart authored numerous peer‑reviewed articles on electron optics, beam instrumentation, and accelerator physics, and he held several patents related to electron‑beam instrumentation.
Academic and administrative career
- University of California, Berkeley (1965–1975) – Faculty member in the Department of Physics; later served as chair of the Division of Applied Science.
- Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) (1975–1985) – Director of the Center for Accelerator Science and Technology, overseeing development of advanced particle‑beam instrumentation.
- Caltech (1985–1997) – Joined as dean of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science (1985–1990). Served as provost (1990–1991) and then president of Caltech from 1991 to 1997. During his presidency, Everhart emphasized interdisciplinary research, expanded the institute’s endowment, and guided the construction of new facilities, including the Kavli Nanoscience Institute. He also promoted stronger ties between Caltech and industry, particularly in the fields of aerospace and biotechnology.

After stepping down as president, Everhart remained active as a senior research scientist at Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and as a consultant on high‑technology policy.
