Thomas Alexander Chignell (31 October 1880 – 25 August 1965) was an English first-class cricketer and dentist.
Early Life and Background
Chignell was born at Havant, Hampshire, England, in October 1880. He was associated with Havant Cricket Club, for which he played club cricket and which he assisted for many years.
First-Class Cricket Career
Chignell made his debut in first-class cricket for Hampshire against Kent at Tonbridge in the 1901 County Championship. He played first-class cricket periodically for Hampshire until 1904, making a total of eighteen appearances during this period.
Described by Wisden as a "slow bowler" who "played some useful innings," Chignell scored 181 runs across his eighteen matches at a batting average of 10.05, with a highest score of 29 not out. As a bowler, he took 33 wickets at a bowling average of 33.57. He recorded one five-wicket haul, with figures of 5 for 68 against Derbyshire in the 1903 County Championship. Chignell was a left-handed batsman and a right-arm slow-medium bowler.
Professional Life
Outside of cricket, Chignell worked as a dentist and maintained a dental practice in Emsworth. He is listed in The Dentists Register of 1963.
Death
Chignell died at the Royal Portsmouth Hospital in August 1965, at the age of 84.
