Thepha district

Thepha district (Thai: อำเภอเทพา) is an administrative district (amphoe) of Songkhla province in southern Thailand. It is situated in the eastern part of the province, adjoining the Gulf of Thailand. The district’s administrative centre is the town of Thepha.

Geography
Thepha occupies a coastal plain that descends toward the Gulf of Thailand. The district’s terrain is largely low‑lying and is used extensively for rice cultivation and other agricultural activities. Its neighboring districts are Na Thawi and Saba Yoi of Songkhla Province; to the east it borders the provincial waters of the Gulf of Thailand.

History
The district was originally established as a minor district (king amphoe) before being upgraded to a full amphoe. Specific dates of its creation and subsequent elevation are not consistently documented in readily available sources.

Administrative divisions
Thepha district is subdivided into several subdistricts (tambons), which are further divided into villages (mubans). Notable tambons include Thepha, Khao Phlu, Khuan Siam, and Pak Kung. Each tambon is administered by a Tambon Administrative Organization (TAO).

Demographics
The district’s population is composed of a mixture of ethnic Thais and Malay‑Thai communities, reflecting the broader demographic pattern of southern Thailand. Religious affiliation in the area includes Buddhism and Islam, with both traditions represented among the residents.

Economy
Agriculture, particularly rice farming, is the principal economic activity in Thepha. The proximity to the Gulf of Thailand also supports fishing and related maritime industries. Small‑scale commerce and local markets serve the district’s population.

Transportation
Road networks connect Thepha with the provincial capital, Songkhla, and with adjacent districts. The district is accessible via provincial highways that run parallel to the coastal plain.

Education and public services
The district possesses basic educational facilities, including primary and secondary schools administered by the Ministry of Education. Health services are provided by a district hospital and several health promotion hospitals.
