The Spinners (American group)

The Spinners were an American soul music vocal group formed in Ferndale, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit) in 1954. Originally known as the Domingoes, they changed their name to the Spinners in 1961. While they had some regional success early on, their national breakthrough came in the early 1970s after signing with Atlantic Records.

The group's signature sound featured intricate harmonies and smooth choreography. They were known for their distinctive blend of lead and background vocals, often featuring multiple lead singers within a single song.

Key members of the group over the years included:

  • Bobby Smith (founding member and consistent lead vocalist)
  • Henry Fambrough (founding member and the only original member active until retirement)
  • Billy Henderson (member from early days until 2006)
  • Pervis Jackson (original member)
  • C.P. Spencer (early member)
  • G.C. Cameron (lead vocalist during Atlantic Records years)
  • PhilippĂ© Wynne (lead vocalist during Atlantic Records years and perhaps their most iconic voice)
  • John Edwards (lead vocalist following Wynne's departure)

The Spinners' string of hits on Atlantic Records included:

  • "It's a Shame"
  • "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love"
  • "One of a Kind (Love Affair)"
  • "Then Came You" (a duet with Dionne Warwick)
  • "Games People Play"
  • "I'll Be Around"
  • "The Rubberband Man"

They continued to record and perform throughout the 1970s and 1980s, experiencing various lineup changes. Though their popularity waned after the 1970s, The Spinners remained a popular touring act, celebrating their musical legacy. The group has received numerous accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They are considered one of the most influential and successful soul groups of all time.

Lineup changes and legal disputes surrounding the group's name plagued them in later years, with various iterations of the group touring under similar names. However, the core legacy of The Spinners and their contributions to soul music remain undeniable.
