The Section Quartet is an American string quartet based in Los Angeles, California. Established in 1998, the ensemble is primarily recognized for its "rock and roll" approach to chamber music, specializing in string arrangements of contemporary rock, alternative, and popular music.
The core membership of the group consists of Eric Gorfain (violin), Daphne Chen (violin), Leah Katz (viola), and Richard Dodd (cello). The ensemble’s repertoire is characterized by the adaptation of complex rock songs into the classical string quartet medium, frequently employing techniques such as distortion and percussive bowing to replicate the timbre of electric instruments. They have produced numerous arrangements of works by artists including Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Muse, and Led Zeppelin.
In 2007, The Section Quartet released the album Fuzzbox under Decca Records, which featured covers of various alternative rock hits. Beyond their independent discography, the group is prolific in the Los Angeles session recording industry. They have collaborated as session musicians and arrangers for a diverse range of artists, including Fiona Apple, Christina Aguilera, Dr. Dre, and Sam Phillips. Additionally, the ensemble has contributed to several motion picture and television soundtracks, providing string performances for various film scores.
