The Province is a daily newspaper published in tabloid format in Vancouver, British Columbia, by Pacific Newspaper Group, a division of Postmedia Network. It is one of British Columbia's two major newspapers, alongside its sister publication The Vancouver Sun.
History
The newspaper was established as a weekly publication in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1894 by Hewitt Bostock and his associates. In 1898, amid the economic boom of the Klondike Gold Rush, the operation was transferred to Vancouver. The first issue of The Vancouver Daily Province was published on March 26, 1898.
Bostock soon bought out his associates and took Walter C. Nichol into partnership. When Bostock entered politics, Nichol became sole owner. In 1923, the Southam family organization acquired the paper from Nichol. The name was changed to The Vancouver Province in 1952 and then to The Province in 1956. The paper moved out of the evening field in 1957 and adopted a tabloid format in 1983.
Format and Circulation
Formerly a broadsheet, The Province now publishes in tabloid format. As of October 2022, it publishes daily except Saturdays, Mondays, and selected holidays. Like most Canadian daily newspapers, its circulation has declined significantly—dropping by 30 percent to 114,467 copies daily between 2009 and 2015.
Radio Station
On March 23, 1922, The Province launched radio station CFCB, broadcasting news, stock market reports, and music. The station's call letters changed to CKCD in 1923. In 1933, the paper turned operations over to the Pacific Broadcasting Co. while continuing to supply news reports. The station signed off for the last time in February 1940 after the newly formed Canadian Broadcasting Corporation requested that it relinquish its licence.
Ownership
The paper is currently owned by Postmedia Network, which also owns The Vancouver Sun. Both papers were sold to Pacific Press Limited in 1957, which was jointly owned by both newspaper companies at the time.
