The Morgaine Stories

The Morgaine Stories (also known as the Morgaine Cycle or The Chronicles of Morgaine) is a series of science fantasy novels written by the American author C. J. Cherryh. The series consists of four primary volumes: Gate of Ivrel (1976), Well of Shiuan (1978), Fires of Azeroth (1979), and Exile's Gate (1988). The first three novels were originally published by DAW Books and have since been collected in various omnibus editions.

The narrative follows the character Morgaine, a woman of unknown origin who is on a multi-world mission to close the "Gates"—technological portals that allow for instantaneous travel across space and time. Within the series' internal logic, the Gates pose a threat to the causality of the universe, as their misuse has led to the collapse of civilizations and the potential for time paradoxes. Morgaine is the sole survivor of a group tasked with destroying these Gates to prevent the destruction of reality.

The story is told primarily from the perspective of Nhi Vanye i Chya, a disgraced warrior from a feudal world who becomes Morgaine’s companion and sworn protector. The relationship between the two characters is central to the series, characterized by themes of loyalty, honor, and the burden of duty.

Categorized as science fantasy, the series blends elements of high fantasy—such as swordsmanship, feudal social structures, and seemingly magical artifacts—with science fiction concepts, including interstellar travel, advanced technology, and alien biology. The "magic" depicted in the stories is generally presented as highly advanced technology that is misunderstood by the inhabitants of the worlds Morgaine visits.

The Morgaine Stories are noted in science fiction literature for their atmospheric world-building and the complex, often stoic nature of the protagonist. Gate of Ivrel, the first book in the series, featured an introduction by Andre Norton, which helped establish Cherryh’s career in the genre.
