The Montgolfier Brothers

Joseph‑Michel Montgolfier (1740–1810) and Jacques‑Étienne Montgolfier (1745–1799) were French inventors and paper manufacturers from Annonay, Ardèche. In 1782 they began experimenting with heated air to achieve lift, culminating in the first public demonstration of a hot‑air balloon on 5 June 1783 in Annonay. Their balloon, a large envelope made of linen and paper sealed with paste, was lifted by a fire set beneath it, achieving an ascent of approximately 2 km (1.2 mi).

On 4 June 1783, the brothers conducted a second flight at the Château de la Borde, launching a bag filled with hot air that remained aloft for about eight minutes, traveling roughly 2 km. The following day, a tethered flight was performed before King Louis XVI and the French Academy of Sciences, further legitimizing their work.

The Montgolfier brothers' invention spurred the development of aeronautics in Europe. Their method of using heated air contrasted with the contemporaneous work of Jacques Charles, who later pioneered hydrogen‑filled balloons. The Montgolfier design was adopted for both scientific observation and public spectacles, leading to the first manned untethered ascent on 21 November 1783 by Jean‑François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d’Arlandes over Paris.

After their pioneering flights, the brothers returned to their family paper‑manufacturing business. Joseph‑Michel continued to advocate for aerial navigation, publishing a treatise titled Voyage dans les airs (1784) describing the physics of hot‑air lift. Jacques‑Étienne withdrew from public scientific activity and focused on the family enterprise.

Their legacy endures in multiple ways: the term “Montgolfier balloon” is still used to describe hot‑air balloons, they are commemorated in French cultural heritage (e.g., streets named after them, statues in Annonay), and their work laid foundational principles for modern hot‑air ballooning.
