The Inner Light (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

"The Inner Light" is the twenty-fifth episode of the fifth season of the science fiction television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. It first aired on June 1, 1992.

The episode follows Captain Jean-Luc Picard after he is struck by an energy beam from a long-dormant probe. He collapses on the bridge of the Enterprise-D and loses consciousness.

Picard awakens to find himself on a strange planet and realizes he is living the life of Kamin, an iron weaver and member of a peaceful, agrarian community on the planet Kataan. Initially, Picard retains memories of his life as Captain of the Enterprise, causing him confusion and distress. He insists he is not Kamin, but as time passes (experienced subjectively as years and decades), he slowly accepts and integrates into his new life. He marries Eline and raises a family, becoming a valued member of the community.

Over the course of his life as Kamin, Picard experiences the joys and sorrows of family life, learns to play the Ressikan flute, and witnesses the slow environmental degradation of Kataan due to a dying sun. The people of Kataan are aware of their impending doom and dedicate their efforts to launching a probe that carries a record of their culture and history, hoping that someone, someday, will learn of their existence.

As Kamin grows old and approaches death, the narrative returns to the Enterprise. Picard awakens on the bridge, the energy beam dissipated. Commander Riker informs him that he was unconscious for only 25 minutes. The probe is recovered and, upon examination, reveals itself to be the vessel that transmitted the energy beam. Inside, the Enterprise crew discovers the Ressikan flute that Picard learned to play during his time as Kamin. Picard retains the memories and skills he acquired during his simulated life and now understands the probe's purpose: to preserve the memory of a lost civilization.
