The Chicharones is an underground hip hop duo composed of American rapper Sleep (Christopher Patrick Hall) and Canadian artist Josh Martinez (Matthew Kimber). Formed in the early 2000s, the group is recognized for integrating diverse musical genres with traditional hip hop elements and vocal harmonies.
Formation and History The collaboration between Sleep, a member of the Oregon-based Oldominion collective, and Josh Martinez, a Vancouver-based rapper and founder of Camobear Records, began through guest appearances on individual solo works. The duo officially debuted as The Chicharones with the release of the studio album When Pigs Fly in 2005.
Throughout their career, the group has maintained a presence in the independent music scene through frequent touring and a series of EP releases, including Pork Rind Disco (2005) and Swine Flew (2009). In 2012, they released their second full-length studio album, Swine Country. The duo has performed at major international music festivals, including South by Southwest (SXSW) and the Calgary Folk Music Festival.
Musical Style and Characteristics The Chicharones' sound is characterized by its departure from standard hip hop conventions, frequently incorporating elements of doo-wop, 1950s rock and roll, and pop. Their compositions often feature fast-paced, synchronized lyrical delivery and multi-part vocal harmonies. Critical reception has typically highlighted the duo's technical proficiency and the eclectic, often humorous nature of their production and lyrical themes.
