The Auteurs were a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1990. The group was led by songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Luke Haines, who had previously been a member of the band The Servants. The initial lineup also included bassist James Banbury, guitarist Tim Weller (later replaced by others), and drummer Glenn Collins.
Musical style and influences
The band’s sound combined elements of Britpop, post-punk, and art rock, characterized by Haines’s lyrical cynicism, melodic guitar work, and occasionally orchestral arrangements. Their style has been compared to that of The Smiths, R.E.M., and early David Bowie.
