The Apex Theory is a self-titled extended play (EP) by the American alternative metal band The Apex Theory. Released on October 9, 2001, by DreamWorks Records, the EP served as a major-label introduction for the group following their independent 2000 release, extendere.
The EP contains three tracks: "Shhh... (Hope Diggy)," "Aseptic," and "Mucus Shifting." All three songs were later included on the band's debut full-length studio album, Topsy-Turvy, which was released in 2002. The recording was produced by Don Gilmore and mixed by Andy Wallace.
The musical content of the EP is characterized by the use of irregular time signatures and rhythmic structures influenced by Mediterranean folk music, a combination the band members—who are of Armenian-American descent—referred to as "heavy Mediterranean groove." The EP reached number 33 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and number 30 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart.
