Thayaht (1893–1959) was the pseudonym of Ernesto Michahelles, an Italian artist, sculptor, fashion designer, and graphic designer. He was a prominent figure in the Italian Futurist movement, known for his innovative and often geometric approach to art and design.
Born in Florence, Italy, Thayaht's work spanned various disciplines. He is particularly recognized for:
- Fashion Design: In 1919, in collaboration with his brother Ram, he designed the "TuTa," a revolutionary one-piece garment intended as a practical, democratic, and anti-bourgeois form of clothing, anticipating modern jumpsuits.
- Sculpture: His sculptural work often explored abstract and geometric forms, reflecting the principles of Futurism and an interest in speed and modernity.
- Graphic Design: He created numerous posters, illustrations, and advertisements, characterized by their bold lines and dynamic compositions. He is also credited with designing the original logo for the fashion house Emilio Pucci.
- Artistic Movements: Thayaht was closely associated with the Futurist movement, participating in their manifestos and exhibitions, although his style often incorporated elements that transcended strict Futurist dogma, leaning towards rationalism and a clean, almost Art Deco aesthetic.
His contributions had a lasting impact on 20th-century Italian art and design, bridging the gap between fine art and applied arts.
