Geography
Thallichtenberg lies in the North Palatine Uplands (Nordpfälzer Bergland), a region characterized by rolling hills and forests. The village itself is nestled in a valley, with its most prominent landmark, Lichtenberg Castle, situated on a nearby hill overlooking the area.
History
The history of Thallichtenberg is closely intertwined with that of Lichtenberg Castle (Burg Lichtenberg). The castle was first mentioned in documents in the early 13th century, though its origins may date back further. Over centuries, the castle served various noble families, including the Counts of Veldenz and later the Wittelsbachs (Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken). The village developed in the shadow of the castle, serving its inhabitants and providing services. The castle was largely destroyed during the French Revolutionary Wars but remains one of the largest castle ruins in Germany.
