Thabo Motang

Thabo Motang (born January 1, 1974) is a South African former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper, and is currently a highly respected goalkeeper coach. He is widely recognized for his extensive career in South African football, both as a player and in his subsequent coaching roles for some of the country's top clubs.

Playing Career Motang began his professional playing career in the mid-1990s, establishing himself as a reliable shot-stopper in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Over his career, he represented several prominent South African clubs, including:

  • Bloemfontein Celtic
  • Orlando Pirates
  • Manning Rangers
  • SuperSport United
  • Wits University (later Bidvest Wits)
  • Black Leopards

He was known for his commanding presence in goal, agility, and strong leadership qualities from the back. Motang also earned a cap for the South Africa national team (Bafana Bafana) in 2000, a significant achievement in his career.

Coaching Career Following his retirement as a player, Motang transitioned into coaching, specializing in goalkeeper development. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and effective goalkeeper coaches in South African football. His coaching journey includes stints at several major PSL clubs:

  • SuperSport United: He served as the goalkeeper coach for a significant period, contributing to the club's success, including multiple league titles and cup victories.
  • Orlando Pirates: Motang returned to his former club as a goalkeeper coach, where he was instrumental in developing and refining the skills of the Buccaneers' goalkeepers.
  • Kaizer Chiefs: As of the early 2020s, Motang has been a key member of the technical staff at Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa's most storied clubs, continuing his work in training and mentoring the club's goalkeepers.
