Tess Harper (born August 15 1956) is an American actress whose career spans film, television, and stage. She is noted for her supporting roles in a number of critically acclaimed movies of the 1980s and 1990s.

Tess Harper was born Tessie Jean Harper in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, United States. She was raised in nearby Dolly, Arkansas, and later attended Arkansas State University, where she studied speech and theatre. After graduating, Harper moved to Dallas, Texas, to pursue acting.

Harper began her professional acting career in the late 1970s, appearing in regional theatre productions and television commercials. She made her screen debut with a guest role on the television series The Love Boat (1979).

Harper’s first major film role came in 1983 with Tender Mercies, where she portrayed Montgomery County, a supporting character that earned her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress.
