TerreStar-1 is a geostationary communications satellite launched in 2009 to provide mobile satellite services (MSS) over North America. It was operated by TerreStar Corporation, a subsidiary of the TerreStar Communications network.
Overview
The satellite was launched on 1 July 2009 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, SLC‑40. At the time of launch, TerreStar‑1 was the heaviest commercial communications satellite ever placed in orbit by SpaceX, with a launch mass of approximately 6 910 kg (15 240 lb). Once in orbit, the spacecraft was positioned at 111° West longitude in geostationary orbit, delivering L‑band mobile communications to a coverage area that included the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The satellite supported voice, data, and messaging services for terrestrial cellular devices equipped with satellite capability, as part of the broader TerreStar network.
Following TerreStar Corporation’s bankruptcy in 2010, the satellite’s spectrum rights and the satellite itself were subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) auctions. In 2011, Dish Network acquired the satellite’s spectrum assets and later assumed control of the satellite for use in its own satellite‑telephony and broadband services.
Etymology / Origin
The name “TerreStar” combines the French word terre (“earth”) with the English word “star,” reflecting the company's goal of providing earth‑wide (or at least continental) connectivity via satellite (“star”). The suffix “‑1” designates it as the first satellite in the TerreStar fleet.
