Authority
The species was first described by the malacologist Richard Brinsley Hinds in 1844 under the original combination Terebra funiculata.
Description
Terebra funiculata is a marine gastropod characterized by an elongated, slender, auger‑shaped shell typical of the family Terebridae. The shell is composed of numerous, tightly coiled whorls with a high spire. Surface sculpture includes fine axial ribs intersected by subtle spiral striations, giving the shell a somewhat textured appearance. Coloration is generally light brown to tan, occasionally bearing faint darker bands or spots. Adult shell length ranges from approximately 20 mm to 40 mm, though size can vary among populations.
Distribution and Habitat
Records for Terebra funiculata (under its synonym Duplicaria funiculata) indicate a distribution throughout the Indo‑Pacific region, including coastal waters of the Philippines, Indonesia, and northern Australia. The species inhabits sandy substrates in shallow marine environments, typically from the intertidal zone down to depths of about 50 m, where it can burrow and prey on small invertebrates.
Ecology
Like other terebrid snails, T. funiculata is a predatory carnivore that utilizes a specialized radular tooth (a toxoglossan radula) to inject venom into prey, primarily polychaete worms. The venom apparatus and feeding behavior are consistent with the general biology of the family Terebridae.
Conservation Status
There is no specific assessment of Terebra funiculata on the IUCN Red List. The species is not known to be subject to significant threats beyond general habitat disturbance that affects marine benthic communities.
Notes on Taxonomic Status
Recent taxonomic revisions, based on morphological and molecular analyses, have transferred many species originally placed in Terebra to other genera within Terebridae. Consequently, Terebra funiculata is presently regarded as a synonym of Duplicaria funiculata. This reflects the ongoing refinement of terebrid systematics.
