Description
Tephritis arnicae is a small tephritid fly, typically 3–5 mm in length. The body is patterned with brown and yellow markings; the wings display characteristic dark bands and spots that aid in species identification. Morphological features such as the ovipositor shape and male genitalia are used to distinguish it from closely related Tephritis species.
Distribution
The species is native to the Palearctic region. Recorded occurrences include:
- Europe: United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, Spain, and the Balkans.
- Extending eastward into western Siberia and parts of Central Asia.
Its presence is closely tied to the distribution of its host plants.
Biology and Ecology
- Host plants: The larvae develop within the flower heads of plants in the family Asteraceae, most commonly species of the genus Arnica (e.g., Arnica montana) and occasionally other related genera such as Aster and Centaurea.
- Life cycle: Adults emerge in late spring to early summer, mate, and females oviposit into developing flower heads. Larvae feed on the floral tissues, completing development within the head capsule. Pupation occurs in the soil, and a single generation is typically produced per year in temperate climates.
- Behavior: Adults are diurnal and are often observed perched on host plants. They feed on nectar and honeydew.
Economic and Environmental Significance
Tephritis arnicae is not considered an agricultural pest. Its host plants are primarily wild or cultivated for ornamental or medicinal purposes (e.g., Arnica montana). Consequently, the species has negligible direct economic impact. However, it plays a role in the ecology of Asteraceae head‑infesting insects and can serve as an indicator of habitat health in meadows and grasslands where its host plants occur.
Conservation Status
No specific conservation assessments have been published for T. arnicae. The species is generally regarded as widespread and stable within its range. Localized declines could occur if host plant populations decline due to habitat loss or over‑harvesting, but such effects have not been documented.
