Tengiomyces

Tengiomyces is a genus of fungi belonging to the phylum Ascomycota. It comprises marine species typically found as saprobes on decaying woody substrates in intertidal zones, particularly in mangrove ecosystems. The genus was established relatively recently, reflecting ongoing discoveries in marine mycology.

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Fungi
  • Phylum: Ascomycota
  • Class: Sordariomycetes
  • Order: Sordariales
  • Family: Sordariaceae
  • Genus: Tengiomyces

The genus Tengiomyces was formally described by J.J. Li, T.C. Wen & K.D. Hyde in 2021. Its placement within the Sordariaceae is supported by morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses.

Description

Species of Tengiomyces are characterized by their sexual reproductive structures (ascomata). The ascomata are typically immersed to semi-immersed in the host substrate, globose to subglobose, carbonaceous, dark-colored (often black), and possess a distinct ostiole (an opening for spore release).

The asci (spore-bearing sacs) are generally cylindrical to clavate (club-shaped), unitunicate (single-walled), and feature an apically thickened wall with a refractive apical ring. This apical ring plays a role in ascospore discharge.

A key diagnostic feature of Tengiomyces is its ascospores. These are typically ellipsoid to fusiform (spindle-shaped), hyaline (clear) to pale brown, septate (e.g., 1-septate), and characteristically possess distinct gelatinous appendages at their poles or along their length. These appendages are believed to aid in dispersal and attachment in the marine environment. The genus is currently known only from its sexual morph.

Habitat and Distribution

Tengiomyces species are predominantly found in marine environments, specifically colonizing decaying woody material, such as submerged or intertidal wood and roots of mangrove trees. Their distribution appears to be restricted to tropical and subtropical coastal regions where mangroves thrive. The type species, Tengiomyces tengioensis, was discovered in a mangrove habitat in Hainan Island, China.
