Tenby Harbour

Definition
Tenby Harbour is a tidal harbour and marina situated on the north side of Tenby Bay in the town of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Overview
The harbour serves a combination of commercial fishing, leisure boating, and tourism activities. Historically a small natural inlet used by local fishermen, it was formalised and expanded during the early 19th century to accommodate larger vessels and to provide a protected anchorage for the growing seaside resort. Today the harbour includes a modern marina with several hundred berths, slipways, a fish market, and facilities for passenger ferries and pleasure craft. Management of the harbour is overseen by Pembrokeshire County Council, which also maintains the adjacent promenade and public amenities.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Tenby Harbour” derives directly from the town of Tenby. The town’s Welsh name, Dinbych (or Dinbych-y-Pysgod), translates as “little fort” (din = fort, bych = small). The harbour adopted the Anglicised form of the town’s name, reflecting its location within the settlement.

Characteristics

  • Location and Layout: Positioned on the western side of the River Cleddau’s estuary, the harbour is protected by a masonry breakwater extending eastward from the town’s shoreline. The entrance is tidal, with a depth that varies according to the spring‑neap cycle.
  • Marina Facilities: The modern marina, developed in phases from the 1970s onward, provides approximately 400 berths for yachts and motor vessels, including electric hook‑up points, water, and waste‑disposal services.
  • Commercial Use: A portion of the harbour is dedicated to a traditional fish market and slipways used by local fishing vessels.
  • Passenger Services: Over the decades the harbour has hosted seasonal passenger ferry services to destinations such as Rosslare (Ireland) and other coastal towns, although the frequency and operators have varied.
  • Recreational Amenities: The surrounding area includes a promenade, a public car park, and access to the South Wales Coast Path. The Tenby Yacht Club, established in the late 19th century, is based within the harbour precinct.
  • Ownership and Administration: The harbour is owned by Pembrokeshire County Council and operated under a Harbour Authority that regulates navigation, safety, and commercial activities.
