Tekax Municipality

Tekax Municipality is a municipality located in the state of Yucatán, in southeastern Mexico. It is situated in the southern part of the state and is part of the administrative division system of the Mexican federal entity of Yucatán. The municipal seat is the city of Tekax, which serves as the administrative and commercial center of the municipality.

The municipality covers an area of approximately 1,600 square kilometers, making it one of the larger municipalities in Yucatán by land area. It is bordered by several other municipalities, including Oxkutzcab, Calkiní (Campeche state to the southwest), and Tzucacab, among others.

Tekax Municipality lies within the Yucatán Peninsula, characterized by a tropical climate and karst topography typical of the region. Its economy is primarily based on agriculture, livestock raising, and forestry. Common agricultural products include corn, henequen (agave used for fiber), and various tropical fruits. The region also has a significant indigenous Maya population, and the Yucatec Maya language is spoken alongside Spanish.

The municipality has historical and cultural significance, with proximity to several archaeological sites and a strong continued presence of traditional Maya customs and community organizations.

Its population, according to recent Mexican census data, numbers in the tens of thousands, with a mix of urban and rural settlements. Infrastructure and public services are typical of rural municipalities in the region, with ongoing development efforts supported by state and federal programs.

Tekax Municipality is governed by a municipal president elected through local elections, in accordance with the political framework of the state of Yucatán.
