Teixeira de Freitas is a municipality located in the extreme south of the state of Bahia, Brazil. It is one of the most populous cities in the region and serves as an important commercial and service hub for the surrounding municipalities in the "Extremo Sul Baiano" (Bahian Far South) micro-region. The city is often referred to as the "Capital do Extremo Sul".

History

The history of Teixeira de Freitas is relatively recent, marked by rapid growth in the mid-20th century. The area began to attract settlers due to its fertile lands and potential for agricultural development, particularly coffee and cattle ranching. The initial settlement grew around a small village called "Teixeira", which was established along a road connecting cities in Minas Gerais to the coast of Bahia.

The name "Teixeira de Freitas" honors General Augusto Teixeira de Freitas, a prominent figure in Brazilian law and statistics, known for his work on codifying civil law. The district of Teixeira de Freitas was officially created on December 26, 1981, as part of the municipality of Alcobaça. However, due to its rapid development and increasing population, it was elevated to the status of a municipality on November 9, 1985, separating from Alcobaça. Since its emancipation, the city has continued to grow, attracting migrants from other parts of Bahia and Brazil seeking economic opportunities.

Geography and Climate

Teixeira de Freitas is situated in the Atlantic Forest biome, though much of the original forest cover in the immediate vicinity has been converted for agriculture and urban expansion. The municipality covers an area of approximately 1,458 square kilometers.

The climate is tropical, characterized by warm temperatures throughout the year and a rainy season, typically from November to March. The average annual temperature hovers around 24°C (75°F).
