Tatra T5C5

Overview
The Tatra T5C5 is a high‑floor, single‑section tramcar produced by the Czechoslovak manufacturer ČKD Tatra (Českomoravská Kolben‑Daewoo) between 1988 and 1998. It was designed primarily for operation on the Prague tram network, where it entered service in 1990. The model is a continuation of the T5 series, incorporating improvements in passenger capacity, performance, and maintenance compared with earlier types such as the T5A5 and T5B6.

Development and Production

  • Other cities: A limited number of T5C5s were exported or transferred to other Czech and Slovak cities, including Bratislava and Brno, primarily for secondary service.
  • Modernisation: Some trams have undergone refurbishments, including interior redesign, installation of LED lighting, updated passenger information systems, and replacement of worn mechanical components.

Preservation and legacy
A small number of T5C5 vehicles have been retained by railway museums and historical societies in the Czech Republic. These preserved units serve as examples of late‑Cold War tram engineering and illustrate the evolution of ČKD Tatra’s product line before the transition to low‑floor designs in the 21st century.
