Tarzan (video game)

Tarzan (also known as Disney's Tarzan) is a platform video game released in 1999, based on the Disney animated film of the same name. Developed primarily by Eurocom and published by Sony Computer Entertainment and Disney Interactive, the game was initially released for the PlayStation and Microsoft Windows. Subsequent versions were developed for the Game Boy Color by Digital Eclipse and for the Nintendo 64.

The game is a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer. Players control the character Tarzan through various stages of his life, beginning as a child and progressing into adulthood. The gameplay mechanics emphasize mobility and exploration; players navigate jungle environments by running, jumping, swinging on vines, and sliding down tree branches. Combat involves the use of "fruit power-ups," which serve as projectiles, and a knife for close-quarters engagement.

The level design follows the narrative arc of the 1999 film. Players must collect specific items to progress or achieve 100% completion, including tokens, four pieces of a jungle map, and the letters "T-A-R-Z-A-N" hidden within each stage. Collecting these letters often triggers a cinematic sequence or unlocks bonus stages. The console and PC versions feature film clips as cutscenes to bridge the gameplay levels, while the Game Boy Color version utilizes static images and text due to hardware constraints.

The game was generally well-received by critics at the time of its release. It was noted for its visual fidelity to the animated source material and its use of 3D backgrounds behind 2D gameplay paths. The Nintendo 64 version, released in 2000, was specifically noted for its technical performance on the platform, despite being released later than the PlayStation and PC versions.
