Tarpum Bay is one of the larger settlements on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 766.
History and Name: The settlement was originally named Glenelg, after Charles Grant, 1st Baron Glenelg, a British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. The name was later changed to Tarpum Bay to reflect the tarpon fish (a species of fish commonly found in the area).
Geography: Tarpum Bay is located in the South Eleuthera district of the Bahamas, at coordinates 24°59′N 76°10′W. It lies along the southern coastline of Eleuthera, situated between Rock Sound and Savannah Sound.
Features: The settlement is known for its vibrantly colored buildings and a large waterside Anglican church. Local fishermen sell their daily catch at one of the two fishing docks in the community. Tarpum Bay is considered a central location on the island, with proximity to Governor's Harbour and Rock Sound airport, as well as various restaurants and attractions.
