Tarnation was an American slowcore/sadcore band formed in San Francisco, California in 1992. The band was fronted by Paula Frazer, whose vocals and songwriting were central to their sound. Tarnation's music is characterized by its melancholic atmosphere, sparse instrumentation, and Frazer's distinctive, often fragile, vocal delivery.
The band's original lineup included Frazer on vocals and guitar, Brandan Kearney on guitar, Michelle Lewis on bass, and Sharon Gilchrist on violin and mandolin. This lineup recorded Tarnation's early EPs. Over the band's lifetime, various members contributed, and the lineup shifted.
Tarnation released several EPs and two full-length albums: Gentle Creatures (1995) on 4AD and Mirador (1997) on 4AD. Gentle Creatures is generally considered their most influential work. Their music draws influences from country, folk, and alternative rock, creating a unique and emotionally resonant sound.
After releasing Mirador, Tarnation disbanded in 1998. Paula Frazer has continued to release music as a solo artist and has collaborated with other musicians. Tarnation's music has been influential in the development of the slowcore and sadcore genres, and their songs continue to be appreciated for their emotional depth and haunting beauty.
