Tanya Holland

Tanya Holland is an American professional chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, and television personality. She is most recognized for her expertise in modern soul food and Southern cuisine, particularly as the founder and executive chef of the now-closed Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland, California.

Holland earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian Language and Literature from the University of Virginia. She later pursued a culinary career, receiving a Grand Diplôme from the École de Cuisine La Varenne in Burgundy, France. Her professional background includes experience working in various high-profile kitchens in both France and the United States.

In 2008, Holland opened Brown Sugar Kitchen, which received critical acclaim and became a significant fixture in the Oakland culinary scene. The establishment was known for its interpretations of soul food classics, such as chicken and waffles. Holland has authored multiple cookbooks, including New Soul Cooking: Updating a Cuisine Rich in Flavor, Design, and Culture (2003), The Brown Sugar Kitchen Cookbook: Southern Soul Food Recipes from Oakland (2014), and Tanya Holland's California Soul: Recipes from a Culinary Journey West (2022).

In the media, Holland has appeared as a contestant on the fifteenth season of the Bravo reality competition series Top Chef. She has also hosted her own television programs, including Tanya's Kitchen Table on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and the podcast Tanya's Table.

Beyond her work in the kitchen, Holland has held several leadership roles within the culinary industry. She was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the James Beard Foundation and has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the hospitality sector.
