Geography and Administration
Tanjung Morawa is a town and district (kecamatan) within Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. It lies on the eastern fringe of the Greater Medan metropolitan area, adjacent to the provincial capital, Medan. The district covers an area of approximately 115 km² (44 sq mi) and is bounded by the districts of Siloam, Deli Tua, and Bilah Batu, as well as the Strait of Malacca to the north.
Demographics
According to the 2020 Census conducted by Badan Pusat Statistik (Statistics Indonesia), the Tanjung Morawa district had a population of 223,458 inhabitants. The population density is therefore about 1,944 persons per square kilometre. The residents are ethnically diverse, comprising primarily of Batak, Javanese, Minangkabau, and Chinese communities, reflecting broader migration patterns in North Sumatra.
Economy
The local economy is mixed, with agriculture (particularly oil palm, rubber, and horticulture) forming the traditional base. In recent decades, industrial development has accelerated, especially along the Jl. Jati corridor, where several manufacturing plants, logistics centers, and a petroleum refinery operate. The presence of the Tanjung Morawa Oil Refinery (operated by PT Pertamina Refinery) is a significant employer and contributes to the district’s role as an industrial hub within the Medan metropolitan area.
Transportation
Tanjung Morawa is served by a network of provincial and national roads. Indonesian National Route 1 (Jalan Jalan Cakrawala) passes through the district, providing direct connectivity to Medan (≈ 15 km southeast) and the coastal harbour of Belawan (≈ 30 km north). Public transport includes commuter buses, minibusses (angkot), and motorcycle taxis. The nearest railway station is Medan Station, located in the city of Medan, while the closest airport is Kualanamu International Airport (≈ 20 km north).
Education and Public Services
The district contains numerous primary and secondary schools managed by the North Sumatra Provincial Education Office. Higher education facilities are limited within the district itself; however, several universities and vocational institutes in Medan are accessible to residents. Health services are provided by the Tanjung Morawa Public Hospital (RS Umum Tanjung Morawa) and a number of community health centers (puskesmas).
History
The name “Tanjung Morawa” combines the Indonesian word tanjung (cape or promontory) with Morawa, which is believed to derive from the local Batak language, possibly referring to a historic settlement or a geographical feature. The area was originally a rural landscape dominated by plantations during the Dutch colonial era. Post‑independence, the district experienced rapid urbanization as part of the expansion of Medan’s metropolitan zone, especially after the establishment of the petroleum refinery in the 1970s.
Governance
Administratively, Tanjung Morawa is divided into several villages (kelurahan and desa), each headed by a local leader (lurah or kepala desa) under the supervision of the district head (camat). The district falls under the jurisdiction of the Deli Serdang Regency government, which reports to the provincial authority of North Sumatra.
