Tanahun 1 is a parliamentary constituency of Nepal, located within Tanahun District in Gandaki Province. It is one of two federal constituencies in the district, established for the purpose of electing members to the federal House of Representatives (Pratinidhi Sabha) and serving as the basis for provincial assembly constituencies.
Overview
Tanahun 1 encompasses the eastern parts of Tanahun District. While exact boundaries are defined by the Constituency Delimitation Commission, it generally includes municipalities and rural municipalities such as Byas Municipality, Bandipur Rural Municipality, and Devghat Rural Municipality, along with parts of others. Its primary function is to serve as an electoral division for federal elections, where voters directly elect one representative to the federal parliament.
Electoral History and Representation
The constituency was established prior to the 2017 general election, following the promulgation of the Constitution of Nepal in 2015 and the subsequent redelimitation of electoral areas. It has since been a significant constituency in national politics.
In the 2022 general election, Ram Chandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress was elected as the Member of Parliament from Tanahun 1. Following his election as the President of Nepal in March 2023, the seat became vacant. A by-election was subsequently held in April 2023, which was won by Dr. Swarnim Wagle of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, making him the current representative for the constituency in the federal House of Representatives.
Provincial Assembly Constituencies
For elections to the Gandaki Province Assembly, Tanahun 1 is typically divided into two provincial assembly constituencies: Tanahun 1(A) and Tanahun 1(B). Each of these sub-constituencies elects one member to the provincial assembly.
