Tanahmerah Bay

Definition
Tanahmerah Bay (Indonesian: Teluk Tanah Merah) is a natural coastal bay situated on the northern shoreline of the Indonesian province of Papua, in close proximity to the city of Jayapura (formerly Hollandia).

Overview
The bay opens onto the Pacific Ocean and lies within the geographical region of the northern coast of New Guinea. Historically, Tanahmerah Bay served as a strategic anchorage during World War II, most notably during the Allied amphibious landings of Operation Reckless in April 1944, which targeted the nearby Japanese-held settlement of Hollandia. In the post‑war period, the bay has been utilized for commercial and military purposes, including hosting facilities of the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut). The surrounding area is characterized by a mixture of urban development near Jayapura and relatively undisturbed coastal and forested landscapes farther inland.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Tanahmerah” derives from the Indonesian words tanah (“soil” or “land”) and merah (“red”), literally meaning “red soil.” The designation likely references the reddish coloration of the local earth and sediment, a common feature of many parts of the Papua region.

Characteristics

  • Geography: Tanahmerah Bay is a semi‑circular indentations of the coastline, bounded by low‑lying coastal plains to the south and a series of modest hills to the east and west. The exact dimensions of the bay vary among sources, but it extends roughly 5–7 kilometres from its mouth inland.
  • Climate: The bay lies within a tropical rainforest climate zone (Af under the Köppen classification), experiencing high annual rainfall, relatively constant high temperatures, and a pronounced wet season from November to April.
  • Hydrology: The bay receives freshwater inflow from several small rivers and streams originating in the adjacent highlands, contributing to a brackish water environment near the shoreline.
  • Ecology: The marine habitat supports typical Indo‑Pacific coral and fish species, though extensive coastal development near Jayapura has led to localized habitat alteration. Mangrove stands are present along parts of the shoreline, serving as important nursery grounds for juvenile fish.
  • Infrastructure: A modest port facility operates within the bay, accommodating cargo vessels, fishing boats, and naval vessels. Road connections link the bay area to Jayapura’s urban centre and to the Trans‑Papua highway system.
