Tamaz Namgalauri (25 September 1957 – 1 November 1991) was a Georgian judoka who competed internationally for the Soviet Union. He was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, and stood 170 cm tall, competing in the lightweight division (71 kg).
Olympic Career: Namgalauri represented the Soviet Union at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, where he competed in the men's lightweight event (71 kg). He finished in 12th place.
Major Achievements: He won bronze medals at the World Judo Championships in 1979 and 1983. He also won gold medals at the European Judo Championships in 1984 and 1985. He was affiliated with Dynamo Tbilisi.
Criminal Conviction and Death: On June 12, 1988, Namgalauri was arrested on charges of raping and murdering a 9-year-old girl with extreme cruelty. He was convicted and sentenced to capital punishment. The sentence was carried out on 1 November 1991 in Tbilisi, at the age of 34.
