Tamarama is an affluent eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 7 kilometres (4 miles) east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Waverley Council.
Geography and Features Tamarama is situated on the coastline between the more famous beaches of Bondi Beach to the north and Bronte Beach to the south. The suburb is primarily residential, characterized by its elevated position offering panoramic ocean views. Tamarama Beach is a relatively small beach nestled between headlands, known for its strong rips and often turbulent surf, which makes it less suitable for novice swimmers but popular among experienced surfers and bodyboarders. Due to its scenic beauty and proximity to Bondi, it has earned the nickname "Glamarama" among locals, reflecting its fashionable appeal and the demographic of its visitors. The beach also features a popular ocean pool, Tamarama Rockpool, located at the southern end.
Etymology The name "Tamarama" is derived from an Aboriginal word, although its precise meaning is debated. Common interpretations suggest it means "storm" or "thunder," possibly referring to the powerful surf conditions often experienced at the beach.
History Prior to European settlement, the area now known as Tamarama was inhabited by the Cadigal people, a clan of the Darug nation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Tamarama became a popular recreational area. A large amusement park, the Wonderland City, operated on the headland from 1906 to 1911, featuring a rollercoaster, ice rink, and a zoo. After its closure, the land was redeveloped for residential purposes, with many of the original beachside bungalows and apartments now complemented by modern architectural designs.
Culture and Recreation Tamarama's picturesque coastal walk is part of the extensive Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, attracting many walkers, joggers, and tourists. The suburb is also a significant location for the annual "Sculpture by the Sea" exhibition, an internationally renowned event where sculptures are displayed along the coastline from Bondi to Tamarama. The beach's reputation for strong currents means it is patrolled by lifeguards, and swimmers are advised to stay between the flags. The Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club, founded in 1906, is one of Australia's oldest surf life saving clubs and plays a vital role in beach safety.
