Tafjordfjella

Definition
Tafjordfjella is a mountainous region in western Norway, comprising a series of peaks and alpine terrain situated primarily in the county of Møre og Romsdal, near the Tafjord fjord.

Overview
The Tafjordfjella area forms part of the larger Scandinavian Mountains and lies within the municipalities of Stranda, Fjord and Ørsta. A considerable portion of the range is incorporated into Reinheimen National Park, which affords it protection and promotes outdoor recreation such as hiking, skiing, and mountaineering. The landscape is characterised by rugged summits, deep valleys, glacially‑carved basins, and numerous alpine lakes.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Tafjordfjella” derives from the Norwegian words Tafjord (the name of the adjacent fjord) and fjella, the plural definite form of fjell meaning “mountain”. Consequently, the term translates literally to “the Tafjord mountains”.

Characteristics

  • Geography: The range extends roughly north‑south along the eastern shore of the Tafjord fjord, with elevations ranging from modest foothills to peaks exceeding 1,800 m (5,900 ft). Notable summits include Karitinden (approximately 1,842 m) and Skridulaupen.
  • Geology: Composed primarily of Precambrian gneiss and schist, the mountains exhibit classic glacial features such as cirques, moraines, and U‑shaped valleys.
  • Climate: The region experiences a maritime sub‑arctic climate, with heavy precipitation, frequent snowfall, and relatively cool summer temperatures, fostering extensive alpine flora and fauna.
  • Ecology: The area supports typical high‑altitude ecosystems, including dwarf birch, mosses, and lichens, as well as wildlife such as reindeer, ptarmigan, and the occasional Arctic fox.
  • Human Use: Historically, the valleys surrounding Tafjordfjella have been used for seasonal farming and fishing. In contemporary times, the mountains attract tourists and locals for backcountry activities; several marked trails and mountain huts are maintained by the Norwegian Trekking Association (Den Norske Turistforening).
