Tadeusz Czeżowski (27 November 1882 – 2 April 1969) was a Polish philosopher, logician, and academic associated with the Lwów–Warsaw School of Philosophy. He is noted for his contributions to formal logic, the theory of knowledge, and value theory (axiology), as well as for his role in the development of Polish philosophical institutions in the first half of the 20th century.
Early Life and Education
Czeżowski was born in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine), which at the time was part of the Austro‑Hungarian Empire. He pursued higher education at the University of Lwów, where he studied philosophy under the direction of Kazimierz Twardowski, the founder of the Lwów–Warsaw School. He earned his doctorate (Ph.D.) in philosophy in 1909 with a dissertation on the logical foundations of scientific knowledge.
Academic Career

He contributed to the university’s burgeoning logical and analytic tradition, collaborating with contemporaries such as Jan Łukasiewicz and Stanisław Leśniewski.
- University of Warsaw: In 1938, Czeżowski accepted a professorship at the University of Warsaw, where he continued his research and teaching in logic and philosophy of science.
- World War II and Post‑War Period: The outbreak of World War II disrupted academic life in Poland. Following the war, Czeżowski resumed his scholarly activities, becoming a professor at the newly established University of Łódź. He served as the rector of the University of Łódź from 1952 to 1953.

He published articles on the logical structure of scientific theories and contributed to the Polish logical tradition’s emphasis on clarity and precision.
- Theory of Knowledge: He explored the epistemological foundations of science, arguing for a systematic relationship between empirical observation and logical deduction. His writings addressed the problem of verification and the role of definitions in scientific discourse.
- Axiology: Czeżowski is recognized for his work in value theory, wherein he sought to delineate the logical character of ethical judgments and aesthetic evaluations. He advocated for a formal approach to evaluating values, distinguishing between factual and normative statements.
