Definition
TER Lorraine was the brand name used for the regional passenger rail services operated by the French national railway company (SNCF) in the former administrative region of Lorraine, northeastern France.
Overview
The TER (Transport Express Régional) network in Lorraine provided commuter and intercity connections between major cities such as Metz, Nancy, Thionville, and Saarbrücken, as well as smaller towns and rural areas. Services were integrated with national SNCF operations, offering ticketing and scheduling coordination across France’s rail system. In 2016, following the territorial reform that merged Lorraine into the larger Grand Est region, the TER Lorraine brand was subsumed under the unified TER Grand Est network.
Etymology/Origin
- TER: An acronym for Transport Express Régional, the designation adopted by SNCF in the early 1990s to identify regional rail services across France.
- Lorraine: The name of the historic region in northeastern France, derived from the medieval kingdom of Lotharingia (Latin Lotharingia), itself named after King Lothar II.
