The T13 road is a designated trunk road in Tanzania, located entirely within the Tanga Region in the northeastern part of the country. It serves as the primary terrestrial link between the inland national road network and the coastal city of Tanga.
Route Description
The T13 road begins at the Segera junction in the Handeni District, where it connects with the T2 trunk road (the major highway linking Dar es Salaam to Arusha and the Namanga border crossing). From Segera, the T13 travels in a generally eastern direction for approximately 75 kilometers (47 miles) before terminating in the city of Tanga, situated on the Indian Ocean.
Administration and Status
The road is managed and maintained by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), the executive agency under the Ministry of Works responsible for the development and maintenance of the national road network. The T13 is a fully paved (bituminized) highway, designed to accommodate the heavy vehicle traffic associated with industrial and commercial transport.
Economic Significance
As the main access route to the Port of Tanga, the T13 road is a critical component of Tanzania’s logistics infrastructure. It facilitates the transport of cargo, including agricultural exports (such as sisal and tea) and imported machinery or raw materials, between the port and the Tanzanian interior. The road also provides a connection for transit traffic moving toward the Kenyan border at Horohoro via its intersection with the T14 road in Tanga.
