Tännesberg is a municipality (Gemeinde) in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab, located in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) region of the state of Bavaria, Germany. It is situated in the northern part of the Bavarian Forest, near the border with the Czech Republic.
Geography
The municipality covers an area of approximately 39.4 km² (15.2 sq mi) and lies at an elevation ranging from about 500 to 800 meters (1,640–2,625 ft) above sea level. The landscape is characterized by forested hills, agricultural land, and small streams. Tännesberg is traversed by the Schwarzbach river, a tributary of the Waldnaab.

Tännesberg is part of the administrative community (Verwaltungsgemeinschaft) of Schönsee. The municipality is subdivided into several Ortsteile (localities), including the main village of Tännesberg and surrounding hamlets such as Obertännesberg, Untertännesberg, and Neumühle.

History
The earliest documented reference to Tännesberg dates to the 14th century, when the settlement was mentioned in Bavarian land registers. Historically, the region belonged to the Electorate of Bavaria and was predominantly agricultural, with forestry and small-scale mining activities playing secondary roles. The municipality experienced modest growth during the 19th and early 20th centuries, followed by population decline after World War II, a pattern common to many rural communities in the Bavarian Forest.
Economy and Infrastructure
The local economy is based on agriculture, forestry, and tourism. Small and medium-sized enterprises operate in sectors such as timber processing, craft manufacturing, and hospitality. Tännesberg is connected to the regional road network via the B299 federal highway, providing access to nearby towns such as Weiden in der Oberpfalz and the district capital, Neustadt an der Waldnaab. Public transportation is limited to regional bus services.
Cultural and Recreational Facilities
Tännesberg hosts a volunteer fire department, a community centre, and several sports clubs, including a football (soccer) team and a shooting club. The municipality participates in regional festivals celebrating traditional Bavarian customs, such as the annual Kirchweih (church fair). The municipal council (Gemeinderat) consists of elected representatives serving five‑year terms. The mayor (Bürgermeister) as of the latest election (2020) is Thomas Kiener, affiliated with the Christian Social Union (CSU).
