Synchlora aerata

Synchlora aerata, commonly known as the wavy-lined emerald, is a species of moth belonging to the family Geometridae. It is widely distributed across North America, with a range extending from southern Canada through the United States and into parts of Mexico and the West Indies. The species is notable within the order Lepidoptera for the unique camouflage behavior exhibited by its larvae.

Taxonomy and Classification

Synchlora aerata was first described by the British entomologist Johan Christian Fabricius in 1798. It is classified under the subfamily Geometrinae, often referred to as "emeralds" due to the characteristic green coloration of the adults. Several subspecies have been identified based on geographic distribution, including S. a. aerata, S. a. albolineata, and S. a. liquoraria.

Physical Description

The adult Synchlora aerata has a wingspan typically ranging from 17 to 25 millimeters. The wings are a pale green or mint color, marked by thin, white, scalloped or "wavy" transverse lines, from which the common name is derived. As is common with many Geometrinae, the green pigment (geoverdin) is chemically unstable and may fade to a yellowish or tan color in older specimens or those exposed to moisture.

The larvae, known as "loopers" or "inchworms," are typically brown or yellowish. However, their physical appearance is often obscured by the deliberate attachment of foreign materials to their bodies.

Life Cycle and Behavior

The most distinctive characteristic of Synchlora aerata is the larval "masking" behavior. The caterpillars are polyphagous, feeding on the flowers and bracts of a wide variety of plants, particularly those in the family Asteraceae (such as daisies, asters, and rudbeckia). To avoid predation, the larva uses silk to attach bits of the plant material it is consuming—such as petals or leaf fragments—to specialized hooked spines (setae) on its back. As the plant material withers or the larva moves to a different colored flower, it replaces the old camouflage with fresh fragments to maintain its visual concealment.

The larvae eventually pupate in a cocoon typically incorporated into the host plant or leaf litter. Depending on the climate and latitude, the species may produce one or several generations per year.

Habitat and Ecology

Synchlora aerata inhabits a variety of environments, including fields, meadows, gardens, and forest edges where flowering plants are abundant. Because the larvae feed on a broad spectrum of host plants, including many common ornamental flowers and agricultural crops, they are frequently encountered in anthropogenic landscapes. While they consume floral structures, they are not generally considered a significant economic pest.
